How Long Will Flowers Last in a Mount Rascal House?
Longer than you might think, at least through the cooler months, and the soft ones do best of all: roses like the 3 Wrapped Red Roses, lisianthus, and the pastel bunches. A house up on Mount Rascal, a hill that tops out at 734 metres, runs cool, and cool is where soft petals last.
Every ten degrees cooler roughly halves how fast a cut flower uses up the sugar stored in its stem, so the petals tire more slowly. In a room of fifteen to eighteen degrees a rose can go ten to fourteen days, in my experience. I learnt that in North Carolina, where the shop stayed cold all winter and the roses just kept going. The warmest spot in the house is what undoes it; out of the afternoon sun and away from the heater, the cool does the rest.
Most flowers going to Mount Rascal are for a birthday, a hospital stay in town, or a funeral. Each card says what to pick, and what to put in the notes where it matters. If you just want to browse, our flower bunches are a good place to start.
The birthday is today, and the house sits up a long drive off a road you've never seen. Pick from our birthday flowers for Mum or the best-selling birthday flowers (the Florists Choice Birthday Arrangement is an easy one), and put a mobile number in the notes.
I learnt why in 2008, taking a bunch up Tomewin Road out of Murwillumbah. The number was on a post at the bottom, and I went up the wrong driveway twice before a lady pegging out her washing pointed me to the right one. Mount Rascal has plenty of drives like that.
Anna's call: if nobody's home until evening, an arrangement beats a bunch, because the wet foam it sits in is its water.
Someone you love is in hospital in Toowoomba, and all you've got is a text. Our get well flowers can go to the ward or wait at home, so check which. For a ward, write the full name (St Vincent's Private on Scott Street, St Andrew's on North Street, Toowoomba Hospital on Pechey Street) and the ward. A short card does it: "Thinking of you, see you home soon."
Keep hospital flowers bedside-sized and low on scent, because a shared room didn't ask for a lily that fills it. Gerberas carry no perfume at all, and their stems are hollow, so a water change every second day is what keeps the heads standing up.
Someone has died and the service is in town this week. Our funeral flowers go to the funeral director beforehand (in Toowoomba that might be Burstows on Ruthven Street or Hiram Philp on Herries Street), so put the director and start time in the notes. Or send sympathy flowers for home a week on, once the house goes quiet. Flowers are such a small thing next to what's happened, and people still remember who sent them.
A sheath is a flat spray that lies on a casket or on grass, where a tall vase would tip. Whites and creams sit quietly among the other wreaths and sheaths at a service.
Plenty of orders don't fit a heading. A thank-you to the neighbours who fed the dogs, a new job, or no reason at all, which is what just because flowers are for. Anna has a view on this.
The Beautiful Pastels Bunch. It is full of the soft-petalled stems a cool house is kindest to, and pastels suit almost anyone.
More ways to shop
A birthday bunch ordered before 2pm on a weekday is on its way up to Mount Rascal this afternoon.
Shop Birthday FlowersBefore 2pm weekdays, so our partner florists in Toowoomba can make it and drive it out. Before 10am Saturday, a short day for florists.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
A mobile number, and the gate if the house sits back from the road. For a hospital, its name and the ward. For a funeral, the director and start time.
At a house, whoever answers. In hospital, in our experience, the ward desk. For a service, the staff at Burstows or Hiram Philp, or graveside at Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery on South Street. In aged care, such as Bolton Clarke Westhaven in Harristown, usually the front desk. Order before 2pm and it goes out today.
If they don't ring to say thanks straight away, that's normal; people put the flowers in water first, and some don't ring for days. To check it arrived, or if something's not right, call 1300 360 469 from 7am to 6pm weekdays (from 10am Saturday), or email [email protected].
Toowoomba was one of our ten busiest delivery areas in 2007 and 2008. Every order was handwritten and faxed. Our partner florists there now, some with us more than thirteen years, get it by email. If anything isn't right, send a photo the same day and we sort it out with the florist. Now and then an order says Toowoomba instead of Mount Rascal, and the florist rings to check.
And then it's just them and the flowers.
