Flowers for someone in a Narrabundah care home: keep them low, and pick stems that like the warmth.
Rooms in aged care tend to be kept warm all year, and warmth is what ages a cut flower. Every ten degrees roughly doubles how fast a stem uses up its stored sugar, so a rose that lasts ten to fourteen days in a cool lounge room gives about seven to ten days in a room held at twenty-two degrees, and the petal edges brown sooner. Still a good run. Chrysanthemums and carnations hold on longest in that warmth.
Then keep the flowers low and small. A bedside table in care already holds the glasses, the tissues and a photo. Low, facing forward, in their own vase or box. I watched plenty of tall bunches tip over at Salt in Kingscliff, usually the first time somebody reached past one.
The right line gets the flowers to the right person the first time.
Goyder Street alone holds the cathedral and both aged-care homes, so the name of the place, and the room, matter as much as the street number.
Three kinds of address need more than a street number: a room in care, a hospital bed and a church or chapel. The first three cards take those in turn, and the fourth covers everything else. If the person you're sending to has no vase to hand, our flower arrangements arrive ready to stand.
It's Mum's eightieth, the cake is happening in a dining room you've only seen in photos, and you can't be there. Send 80th birthday flowers, or any of our birthday flowers, with the home's name, her full name and her room in the notes. Jindalee and Mountain View are both on Goyder Street, so "the home on Goyder Street" could be either.
The full name matters too. I learned that the hard way in 2007, walking a birthday bunch from our Marine Parade shop up to the Uniting home on Kingscliff Street, card addressed to Joan. There were two Joans. (I went very red. A nurse sorted it.)
Anna's pick: the Florists Choice Birthday Arrangement. It arrives already in its container, so nobody has to find a vase.
A fall, a new hip, and the updates are coming by text. The Canberra Hospital in Garran is the nearest public hospital, so put the ward and bed in the notes; in our experience the flowers go to the ward desk and are carried in from there. Our hospital flowers suit the ward. If they're being discharged in the next day or two, pick the day they'll be home at checkout and send the get well flowers to the house instead.
Card idea: "Rest up. See you when you're home."
Oriental lilies are glorious at home, but in a shared room the scent reaches the next bed too. Gerberas carry next to none, and the 3 Gerberas In A Vase arrives already standing in water, which a ward with no spare vase appreciates.
The funeral notice names a church or chapel you've never seen, and you're ordering from another state. For the Macedonian Orthodox cathedral of St Kliment of Ohrid on Goyder Street, St Benedict's on Jerrabomberra Avenue or the White Lady Funerals chapel on Canberra Avenue, write the full name, the service time and the family's surname, and order the day before if you can. See our funeral flowers and wreaths and sheaths, or send sympathy flowers to the family's house for afterwards.
Card idea: "Thinking of you all, with love."
White sits right in almost every tradition. A round wreath like the White Funeral Wreath is the shape the funeral directors I worked with knew exactly where to put.
Some orders fit none of the above: a student finishing Year 12 at Narrabundah College (our graduation flowers are for exactly that), a neighbour who fed the cat, or just because flowers for a friend. Anna has a view on this one.
Go bright and add chocolate. With no theme to match, the colour can do the talking, and the Colourful Bunch Including Chocolates suits a family kitchen, with the chocolate for whoever just finished their exams.

Order before 2pm on a weekday and birthday flowers go out on this afternoon's run.
Shop Bestselling Birthday FlowersBefore 2pm on a weekday for same-day delivery, so there's time to make your order up for the afternoon run.
Before 10am on a Saturday, which is a half day.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day. Later orders take whatever date you pick at checkout.
For a care home, a church, the college or the hospital, use the matching line in the address card above; the church line works for the White Lady chapel too. For a house, add the recipient's mobile and a shady spot to leave the flowers.
At Jindalee or Mountain View, the front desk generally signs and staff carry the flowers to the room. For a funeral at St Kliment's or St Benedict's, in our experience it's the funeral director's team. At a house, whoever answers the door. Order inside the cutoff, and the flowers are in Narrabundah today.
A confirmation email comes straight away, and that's often the last you hear until your person rings you. Plenty of people don't ring the same day, people in care especially (the afternoon is busy, the phone is in a drawer), so silence doesn't mean the flowers didn't land. To check on your order or change it, call 1300 360 469 (or 02 8090 0577, the number at the top of the page), 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, or email [email protected].
Most care homes work like a ward. Desk first, then the room. When a care-home delivery goes wrong, it's usually that gap: flowers sitting on a busy desk until somebody has a free minute. A room number in the notes closes most of it. If anything isn't right when it arrives, send us a photo the same day and we sort it with the florist.
