Amaroo is a newly established suburb in Canberra, and a district of Gungahlin. It was officially recognised in 1991 and the name ‘Amaroo’ means ‘a beautiful place’ in one of the local Aboriginal dialects.

Although Amaroo is fairly new, the history of the land goes back at least one hundred and fifty years.

John and Maria Crinigan resided in a stone cottage in the area from approximately 1842 to 1863. John came from Westmeath, Ireland when he was 19 years of age after he was sentenced to transportation for life for “assaulting habitation”. He reached the colony of New South Wales in 1836 and was dispensed to work for George Thomas Palmer on his Palmerville property; the remnants of the farmhouse have now become a Heritage Park in Belconnen.

They settled in the stone cottage and in 1849 John was given a pardon.

Construction of a shopping precinct in Amaroo began in 2012 and it now borders on Horsepark Drive near the Amaroo School.
