Thank you, Chris. I think husbands sometimes worry that a dozen red roses is too obvious, that they ought to have come up with something cleverer. Then the roses arrive, and obvious was exactly right, because she knows precisely what they mean and there is nothing to work out.
Glad she was so happy, and that they held on well for her in Beresfield.
A Crematorium Sheaf Does an Hour in the Chapel, Then Two Weeks at Home
People picture funeral flowers doing one job. In my experience most of them do two. First comes an hour or so out of water in an air-conditioned chapel, where the dry air pulls moisture from soft petals until the edges go limp. Then, more often than not, the family takes them home and they sit on a kitchen table for a fortnight.
So I built for both. Chrysanthemums and carnations have tough, waxy petals that barely notice chapel air, and a disbud chrysanthemum gives two to three weeks in a lounge room afterwards. Roses look beautiful in a sheaf and give about a week at home, a bit longer if someone recuts the stems on an angle and gets them into water the minute they are through the door. It took me a summer of funeral work to get that balance right.
Beresfield is a small suburb with a big crematorium, a string of business parks and streets of family homes in between, so the orders are mixed. If there is no occasion to name and you just want someone to know you are thinking of them, our thinking of you flowers suit every address on this page.
You have a funeral notice that says Newcastle Memorial Park, a start time and not much else. Flowers for the service go to the chapel as funeral flowers; flowers for the family go to the house a day or two later, as sympathy flowers for home. Siobhan and I drove sympathy flowers out to Tweed Heads Lawn Cemetery ourselves in the shop years and learned fast that a service runs to the minute. Put the chapel, the time and the funeral director in the notes. The card can be short: "Thinking of you all, with love."
Anna's call: whites and creams with plenty of green read right in a chapel of almost any faith. If the family has Chinese or Vietnamese heritage, keep red out of it entirely.
The birthday flowers, or celebration flowers for a new job, are going to work, and you have a company name and a street. Office or shop floor, reception usually signs for them and calls the person up. Put the unit and a front-desk number in the notes; a lot of the units along Weakleys Drive look alike from the road. I learned workplace deliveries in 2007 on Ozone Street in Chinderah, carrying pink gerberas through a roller door past a row of blokes in hi-vis. The whole floor stopped. She walked them back past every one of them, slowly.
Aircon and fluorescent light are hard on a desk bunch. Carnations and chrysanthemums shrug off the dry air, and roses do beautifully moved to the coolest corner, off the desk.
The text said Maitland Hospital, or maybe John Hunter, and a ward number you are not sure is still right. If they are home in a day or two, send get well flowers to the house. For a longer stay, in our experience the flowers go to the front desk or the ward clerk, at Maitland Hospital on Metford Road and at John Hunter alike, and staff take them up anywhere from half an hour to a few hours later. Full name and ward in the notes. "Thinking of you. Get home soon." is plenty for the card.
Wards are small and often shared. A boxed hospital arrangement needs no vase, and unscented stems keep the peace with the next bed: Asiatic lilies, gerberas, chrysanthemums.
Lots of orders do not fit a heading, and not knowing is allowed. My first ever flower call, at the Kingscliff shop in 2007, a woman asked me three quick questions and I told her to hang on while I checked with my wife.
A mixed bunch in the colour they wear most, with a rose or two at the centre. Colour is what people remember. If you have no idea, pink with white works at any age and in any room.

For Newcastle Memorial Park, the chapel, the service time and the funeral director. For a business park, the company, the unit and a front-desk number. For a house, a mobile, in case nobody answers.
At a service, usually the funeral director's staff, before the family arrives. At work, reception. At a house, whoever opens the door, or a shaded spot you name. Order now and it can be there this afternoon.

Sympathy flowers are the ones you hear nothing back about, and back when Andrew and I took the calls ourselves I used to worry about that on people's behalf. A family in the week of a funeral is not ringing anyone to say the flowers were lovely. They saw them, though. They read the card, probably twice. And if a stem you picked was not at the market that morning, the florist swaps in something of the same colour and value and says so on the order, so nothing changes quietly.
Sounds simple enough, and it is.
