Flower delivery to Blue Mountain Heights can be today: order before 2pm on a weekday and the flowers arrive this afternoon, or pick a later day at checkout. Add a mobile in the notes, and if nobody's in, a neighbour can take them (it's that kind of street). Sending to a room at Brownesholme on Highfields Road? Put the room number in. The Florist's Choice Birthday Bunch With Chocolates and the Gorgeous Whites Bunch are in our same-day range below, or call us, and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will help you choose, no rush at all.
Lilies for a Big Blue Mountain Heights House? Let the Scent Fill the Room
Oriental lilies have a name for being too much, and in a small bedroom or a shared ward they can be. Most houses in Blue Mountain Heights are the opposite case, four bedrooms and up, and a big living area spreads the scent thin enough to read as a welcome.
Cool rooms help too. Lilies open faster in warmth, so where the house stays cool the buds take their turn one after another, and in my experience an Oriental can go two weeks. Pinch each anther off as the flower opens; dry pollen bonds to fabric, so lift it with sticky tape and never rub. I learned that on a white tablecloth in North Carolina. The tablecloth didn't make it.
Birthdays are what we send most, with sympathy next, and in a suburb where half the families are couples with the house to themselves again, anniversaries earn a card of their own. No spare vase? Our flower arrangements arrive standing in their own base.
It's a 50th or a 60th, you can't be there, and you want to know someone will be home. In 2008 I carried a 60th birthday arrangement up a driveway on Scenic Drive, Bilambil Heights, a ridge suburb back home on the Tweed with houses tucked into the trees like here, Asha on my hip, and knocked on the wrong door. The woman knew exactly who I meant, walked the flowers across herself, and I'm fairly sure stayed for cake. I was mortified. She wasn't.
Streets like that tend to look after each other. Pick from the 50th birthday flowers or our best-selling birthday flowers.
Anna's pick: in a big room, height reads as occasion. Flowers about one and a half times the height of the vase look like a celebration from across the lounge.
Another year together, and you'd like it marked from wherever you are. Decide first who should see them turn up: the two of them at home, or a whole office at morning tea. Romantic flowers suit either, and so do roses.
Roses at work make a moment in front of people. At home they last longer out of the afternoon sun, with the stems recut at about forty-five degrees on the first day. A flat cut sits against the bottom of the vase and the water stops moving up.
Someone has died, and you're sorting it from wherever you are, the notice open on your phone. Funeral flowers go in ahead of the service, to the chapel at Australian Heritage Funerals on James Street, say, or to St Anne's on Highfields Road, and in our experience the funeral director has them set out before anyone arrives. Sympathy flowers for home can follow a day or two later. On the card: "Thinking of you all. Love from us." It's a strange day to be choosing colours, and it still helps to have chosen.
Too early, and a tribute dries out in a back room. The florists I worked with rang the funeral director for the delivery window.
Half the orders we get don't fit a heading: get well flowers for someone at St Andrew's on North Street, a thinking of you bunch for a mum at Brownesholme on Highfields Road. Those tend to go to the front desk first, and the staff carry them through. "Thinking of you. Home soon." is plenty.
This is where I'd go the other way from the lilies. A small room holds scent close, so send something arranged in its own base, like the Blue Mist Arrangement, and save the Orientals for when they're home.
More ways to choose
Order lilies before 2pm on a weekday and they're in Blue Mountain Heights the same day, with buds still to open.
Shop Lilies2pm on weekdays, so there's time to make it and get it out the same day.
10am on Saturday, because the Brisbane market at Rocklea shuts at noon and the day is shorter.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
A mobile, and a neighbour's name if you have one. For a hospital, the ward at St Andrew's or Toowoomba Hospital on Pechey Street. For Brownesholme, the room and wing. For a funeral, the service time and the funeral home, Australian Heritage or Hiram Philp, say.
At home, the person it's for, or whoever's next door. At a hospital or care home, the front desk, then the staff. For a service, the funeral director, ahead of time. Order before 2pm today and it goes out on this afternoon's run.
Once it's ordered, the flowers go out on the day's run, and the florist will usually only ring the number in the notes if something doesn't add up. The thank-you call can take until dinner.
To check on an order or change it, ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, or email [email protected].
The order goes to our partner florist in Toowoomba. She builds it, and it's up the New England Highway into Blue Mountain Heights the same day. If anything's wrong when it lands, we ask for a photo that day and fix it. Now and then the house next door takes them in, and the birthday girl finds out when she gets home from the shops. Nobody has complained yet.
That's your part done. The street can take it from here.
