For a Kingsthorpe house, natives, chrysanthemums and carnations are the ones I'd lean on, most of all from November to March. Oakey, just along the highway, averages about 31 degrees on a January afternoon, three or four above Toowoomba, and a house shut up all day runs warmer again. Heat makes a cut flower burn through its stored sugar, so soft petals open and tire days early.
Gypsophila is lovely in a cool room and the first to go in a hot one. My first January on a Queensland bench, I swept its tiny florets off the floor all week. Waxflower is the filler for the heat: it holds every floret while the vase stays full, so top it up each morning.

You've got a ward number off a text and a hunch they'll be home by the weekend. Check if it's Oakey Hospital on Beale Street, Toowoomba Hospital on Pechey Street or St Vincent's Private, and add a home address as a backup. In 2008 I took a get well bunch into the old Byron Bay Hospital on Shirley Street and found the woman it was for had gone home to Suffolk Park that morning, so I finished up on her verandah instead (Asha asleep in the car seat, for once). Sympathy and Funeral Flowers Go Straight to the Director
You've read the notice twice and you can't get there. The service might be with Henry Lorrimer Funerals in Oakey or Burstows on Ruthven Street, sometimes with a burial at Oakey Cemetery. Put the director and the service time in the notes and the funeral flowers go to them, ready for the service. A week on, sympathy flowers for home land once the visitors have thinned out. Flowers are the least of what that family needs, and still the thing you can do from wherever you are. Card idea: "With love, thinking of you all."

In our experience, hospital and aged-care staff take flowers at reception and carry them through. At a house, whoever answers, or the florist rings that mobile. In before 2pm, in Kingsthorpe this afternoon.
Once It's Ordered, This Is What Happens
You get a confirmation email straight away. Then, usually, nothing, and a recipient who doesn't ring that night is normal (they ring their sister first). It was the worry I heard most on the phones, from 2006 until Ivy arrived in 2011.

In 2007 and 2008 this area was one of our ten busiest. Orders were handwritten and faxed. Yes, faxed. The florists we work with in Toowoomba now, some with us more than thirteen years, make each one the same day. Now and then an order arrives with Oakey's 4401 instead of 4400, and the florist rings to check. Anything wrong, send a photo that day and we sort it.
After that, it's theirs.
