Sending Flowers to a Glenvale House, Nursery or Care Room? An Arrangement Looks After Itself
Send an arrangement anywhere nobody has time to fuss: a house with a brand-new baby, or a room in aged care. It sits in wet foam inside its own box or vase and drinks for days with nobody touching it. A wrapped bunch is lovely where a vase is ready and someone has five spare minutes. A new mum hasn't got them, and neither has a carer with a whole wing.
Carnations and chrysanthemums go about a fortnight in foam in a cool room, in my experience. Save the scented lilies for a house with a vase waiting. It took me a season at Salt in Kingscliff to stop putting together bunches for rooms with nowhere to stand them.
Glenvale's median age was 33 at the 2021 Census, and the suburb also has three aged care homes. So birthday flowers here could be headed for a nursery or a care room, and each wants something different.
The photo has come through and you can't get there to hold her. Send to their place, or to maternity at Toowoomba Hospital or St Vincent's Private, where in our experience the front desk takes new baby flowers and staff carry them up. Mums are often home within a day or two, so check first. Use the parents' names in the notes. Nobody at the desk knows who Matilda is yet.
Anna's pick: the Blue Mist Including Vase & Chocolates. The vase comes with it, so nobody goes hunting for one, and the chocolates are for the 3am feed.
Gran turns ninety on Thursday. If she's at Ozcare on Greenwattle Street, Bupa Glenvale on McDougall Street or Glenvale Villas on Hursley Road, put the home, her wing and her full name in the notes. Reception usually takes the 90th birthday flowers and a carer walks them through.
At Feros Village in Byron Bay, in 2008, I carried in an arrangement from the Kingscliff shop for a woman turning ninety and found four bunches already on her windowsill: in a vase, a water jug and an old pickled-onion jar. Mine was the only one sitting in its own foam. A carer said "thank God" before the birthday girl said anything. I took the credit.
Anna, on dementia wings: go familiar. Roses and daisies, the flowers they would have grown, built low so nothing tips.
The notice came through on the family group chat. Lifeworks Uniting Church on Boundary Street holds funerals inside Glenvale; others run from a chapel in town or at Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery. Copy the place and start time into the notes and the florist aims to have the wreath or sheath there before the family, with flowers for the house a week later. "Remembering him with you today" is enough for the card.
White is the standard at a Uniting service, and a Red Rose Sheath from a husband or wife sits right there too. The sheath goes home with the family afterwards. Cut the binding and the roses give another four or five days in water at home.
Plenty of orders have no occasion at all: a new job, a rotten week, a sister you haven't rung since winter. Just because flowers need no explaining. If you want a steer, the Australian Natives Bunch is our biggest seller.
Natives are woody and forgive water nobody tops up. If there's leucadendron in the bunch, stand it in a dry jar when the soft stems finish and it holds its colour for months. The rest of the native flowers work the same way.

An arrangement ordered before 2pm on a weekday is in the room this afternoon.
Shop Arrangements That Bring Their Own WaterBefore 2pm on a weekday for same day, so it makes the afternoon run. Before 10am Saturday, as most florists close around lunchtime. No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day. After that, you pick the day at checkout.
Ozcare, Bupa Glenvale or Glenvale Villas: full name, and the wing or villa number. Toowoomba Hospital or St Vincent's: the ward. Lifeworks Uniting, or a chapel such as Hiram Philp on Herries Street: the service time. Anywhere else: the number, and the side gate if that's the way in.
Care home or hospital: reception, then staff carry it in. Church: in our experience, the funeral director. House: whoever answers, or if nobody does, a shady spot and a call to you. Order now and it's built today.
Once you've paid, our partner florist in Toowoomba builds it that day and drives it out to Glenvale. At a care home or hospital, our part ends at reception.

From 2006 until Ivy arrived in 2011 I took the worried calls, and nearly all of them went the same way: has it arrived, because she hasn't rung. Mostly she was feeding a baby, or dozing in the chair after lunch at the home. You'd love the call, and you'd hate to be the reason she got up for it. Now and then a newborn's house doesn't answer the knock because everyone's finally asleep, so the flowers wait in the shade and you get a call instead.
Give the card an extra minute. It outlasts the flowers.
