Sending roses to Stratford? What to expect when they arrive

Anna, qualified florist | on roses in wet, warm air

A rose that looks a little tight at the door is the right one. I learnt to buy them by the sepals in North Carolina: those green leaves under the bud, once folded back to about ninety degrees, mean it has stored the sugar to open. Stratford afternoons average about twenty-nine degrees, so it opens fast, often by the next day.

With better than two metres of rain a year, the guard petals, the outer layer that takes the knocks in the van, can pick up small brown spots, which is grey mould sitting on that one layer. Pull them off on day one and the bloom underneath is clean. Fresh water every second day, because bacteria get into a stem inside a day in warm water, and 3 Wrapped Red Roses do beautifully in that climate.

Stratford Flower Delivery for a Birthday, a Funeral or a New Baby

A birthday, a funeral or a new baby: each lands a little differently in Stratford, so here is what to send and what to put in the notes for each, plus the odd celebration at the bowls club.

Birthday Flowers to the House or the Bowls Club

It's her birthday, and she may well be out when they knock. Send to the house, or to the party: Stratford Bowls Club on Rinks Close takes birthday bookings, so put the club, the booking name and a mobile in the notes. A 60th or one of our best-selling birthday flowers suits either.

I learnt the club version in 2007, taking an eightieth birthday bunch up Marine Parade to the Kingscliff Bowls Club. She was mid-end on the green. A man in a white hat explained that nobody walks on during an end, least of all a man holding flowers. I waited at the ditch. She won the end. Then the whole rink sang.

A wrapped bunch is lovely once it is in water. On a club bar it can wait an hour before anyone finds a jug, so one that comes in its own vase, like the Blue Mist Including Vase & Chocolates, keeps drinking the whole time and stands up on its own.

Send Funeral Flowers to St Augustine's and Sympathy Flowers Home

The notice says St Augustine's, Kamerunga Road, and a time. A sheath or wreath goes to the Mass; sympathy flowers to the home reach the family once the house goes quiet. Put the service time and the funeral director in the notes. On the card, "With love, thinking of you all" is enough. Flowers change nothing about that morning, and the family still reads every card.

Anna, on a sheath with no water

A sheath has no foam and no vase. It lies flat on the casket, with a layer of leaves underneath to keep sap off the wood, and it lives on the water already in the stems, which is why the florists I worked with timed it to the service. The White Lily & Rose Sheath usually goes home with the family afterwards: untie it, recut the stems and it goes straight into a vase.

New Baby Flowers Work Best Without a Vase

One photo, a name, and you are not sure if they are home yet. If they are still in hospital, the hospital and the ward go in the notes; if they are home, give them a day or two to settle. That first week is visitors and no spare hands, so new baby flowers that need no vase do best. For the card: "Welcome, little one. Sleep when you can."

Anna's call: keep the scent down in a small room with a newborn. Oriental lilies are glorious in a big room, and they fill it more each day as the buds open. The Blush Pinks Arrangement With Chocolates is built in wet foam, so there is no vase to find, and its lilies are Asiatics, close to scentless. Pinch the orange anthers off as each lily opens. The chocolates are for the parents.

If Nothing Above Fits, Go Native

Plenty of orders have no heading: the neighbour who fed the dog, a new job, a bad week. Anna has a view on these.

Send the Native Arrangement With Chocolates. The leucadendron in it goes about ten days or more in a warm house, then dries in an empty vase and holds its shape for months. Keep it away from the fruit bowl, mangoes especially, because the waxflower drops every floret at once near ripening fruit. There are more in our native flowers range.

Beat the Cutoff and It Goes Out Today

Cutoffs

2pm weekdays, which leaves the afternoon to build and deliver.
10am Saturday, a shorter day for most of our florists.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.

What the notes need

A unit number if there is one, and a mobile. For St Augustine's, the service time and the funeral director; for the bowls club, the booking name.

Who receives it

Whoever answers. If nobody is home, in our experience the florist rings the mobile before leaving anything on the verandah. Same day stays open right up to the cutoff.

Did It Get There?

An order email comes straight away. A florist in or close to Stratford builds and delivers it on the day you chose. To check on it, change the card or fix an address, ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, or email [email protected]. If something looks wrong when it lands, send us a photo that day.

Siobhan, on new mums and full houses

If you don't hear back, that's normal, a new mum isn't writing thank-you texts and a family after a funeral has a house full of people and casseroles. I took calls from 2006 to February 2011 from people sure their flowers never came, when they had been on the kitchen bench all along. When it does go wrong it's usually small, a card signed "Mum" that meant "Mum and Dad", and it gets fixed that day.

Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Siobhan and I bought the Kingscliff Florist and Gift Shop on Marine Parade in 2006 and delivered most of the flowers ourselves until about 2009: John Flynn Hospital, Tweed Hospital, churches, nursing homes and, once, the edge of a bowling green. I took inbound calls myself until 2013.

I have never lived in Cairns, but it was one of our ten busiest delivery areas in 2007 and 2008, before the network even had a name, and one of its first eight towns in 2009. The rest is on about Lily's Florist.
